“But pleasures are like poppies spread

You seize the flower the bloom is shed

Or as the snow falls in the river

A moment white then gone forever”

Poem: Tam O’Shanter

lovehearts valentine's day

Getting near to Valentines Day. This beautifully sweet poem wouldn’t go amiss if you’re looking for words instead of roses!

My Peggy’s face, my Peggy’s form,
The frost of hermit age might warm;
My Peggy’s worth, my Peggy’s mind,
Might charm the first of human kind.
I love my Peggy’s angel air,
Her face so truly heav’nly fair,
Her native grace so void of art,
But I adore my Peggy’s heart.
The lily’s hue, the rose’s die,
The kindling lustre of an eye;
Who but owns their magic sway,
Who but knows they all decay!
The tender thrill, the pitying tear,
The generous purpose nobly dear,
The gentle look that Rage disarms,
These are all Immortal charms.

“What is title, what is treasure,

What is reputation’s care?

If we lead a life of pleasure,

‘Tis no matter how or where!”

A great weekend down in Dumfries at The Big Burns Supper. Good company, good music and poetry. We met some great people enjoying the celebrations and remembering that:

“Twas then a blast of Janwar wind blew Hansel in on Robin”

Loved meeting Meghan and her friends out celebrating her 20th birthday and of course she downloaded the RBQ app!

” Then let us toast John Barleycorn,
Each man a glass in hand;
And may his great posterity
Ne’er fail in Old Scotland!”

Poem: John Barleycorn: A Ballad

Another big day for RBQ and only 1 more day to go to Burns night! We’re raising a toast tonight after  the Scottish Sun launched the RBQ app giveaway to their readers with a feature in today’s paper.

We created a  bespoke Robert Burns quiz for The Sun. The  idea was a  head to head with a Yes/No Indyref Campaign showdown, at The Sun office – just who knew the most about Robert Burns? Maybe the answer would give the don’t knows a clue as to which way to vote!

Our very own quizmaster Douglas, was ready in the chair – questions in hand, waiting for a “battle, sair and tough”!

But the No’s and Better together were Timorous Beasties with a no show! The big fearties left First Minister, Alex Salmond as our outright Burns aficionado with no contest.

Sing on, sweet thrush, upon the leafless bough,
Sing on, sweet bird, I listen to thy strain,
See aged Winter, ‘mid his surly reign,

Poem: Sonnet Written On The Author’s Birthday

Listen here to RBQHQ having a chat today on MacAulay and Co, BBC Radio Scotland. We had a great time talking about our Robert Burns Quiz App. Steward’s Enquiry at the end though – maybe a wee bit cheating going on when they had a go at some of the questions about Burns’ works?

Iz has found a new career – a listener (we’re mighty suspicious about this…) phoned in to say what a lovely voice she has! Audio books here we come!

We were delighted we had time to mention the wonderful Alison Tait from the Robert Burns World Federation who has been such a great supporter since we set out on our Burns journey. Now off to get our bags packed…. it’s nearly time to head on down to Dumfries for the Big Burns Supper!

“An’ some are busy bleth’rin
Right loud that day.”
Poem: The Holy Fair
